Nibbles and Yum-Yums: September 17, 2010

This post is a part of the weekly regular series in which I share my favorite Internet finds from the past week. Enjoy!

Okay, let’s be honest here: This isn’t a weekly thing the way I originally planned it to be. It’s more of a “when-Chrissy-has-time-and-thinks-about-it” sort of thing. But I enjoy doing it and I hope you enjoy checking out my fabulous Internet treasures. So let’s all just nibble when the nibbles are around and not question the regularity with which they appear. Agreed?

The Scariest Video You Have Ever Watched in the Name of Science

Wanna appreciate what you do for a living? Watch this video and think about how you’re not “free climbing” a 1700 foot electrical tower as a storm approaches in the distance. Beware though: It made me a little queasy.

Working for Wonka

My friend, Kathy, recently started this snarky little blog that describes the madness that is working for an entrepreneur. If you’ve ever experienced this (or are considering taking the leap), head on over to Working for Wonka and get some support. You’re gonna need it.

The Big Re-Design (GULP)

In the month of October, I’ll be doing a big redesign of the Eat Your Career Laboratory (my home office). I’ll be documenting the entire thing here with images and maybe even a little video if I’m feeling adventurous. The Unclutterer Workspace of the Week section is providing tons of inspiration for me.

Oh, Citibank. I thought I knew you…

So, apparently Citibank recently sent this out to their female employees. Personally, I’m horrified. Really, Citibank? You think I need to be told not to brush my hair in public? And if I happen to do it, you think it will sabotage my career? Really? And this applies to women only? Really? This list is full of antiquated gender stereotypes: “women tend to be more naïve,” “women ask permission,” “women apologize for the smallest error.” I had a Citibank credit card but I just chopped it up. Done.

Nibbles and Yum-Yums: August 13, 2010

I’ve been a little remiss in my nibbles as of late so today, I’m sharing a bigger bite that unusual. I hope you’re hungry!!

First off, if you haven’t seen yet, I’m giving away five copies of my Stress Management Workbook. To be entered to win, check out this post (it’s really easy!).

Inception Reflections

I’ll be honest here: The movie Inception lost me about halfway through when that one guy started floating around the hotel room. I’m definitely planning on watching it again, especially now that I’ve read this insightful analysis of how it relates to self-improvement. I just love it when creative people take something, break it apart, and turn it into something new and cool. Dragos Roua is known for this.

Be My Guest

I’ve done some guest posts recently on a few awesome blogs so click on through if you’re so inclined and read more from me in other places:

FREE Job Interview Success Kit

The mastermind behind Ask a Manager has just created a brand new downloadable guide called “How to Prepare for an Interview: Boost Your Confidence, Impress Your Interviewer and Get a Job.” It includes a ton of good stuff including a 4-step process for interview prep, a tip sheet to help you get in the right frame of mind, and a list of questions to ask in the interview (that always seems to trip people up). And here’s the best part: It’s free.

My Newest Buddies

As most of you know, I recently attended a retreat in Portland, Oregon. I met so many great people, I feel like I stumbled into a hidden world of new and fabulous wonders. Now, I just want to share my treasures with the world! Meet the crew from the Lift Off Retreat and say “hi” if you’re interested. Don’t be shy…they’re all exceptionally approachable people.

And the wonderful event was hosted by Charlie Gilkey (Productive Flourishing) and Pamela Slim (Escape From Cubicle Nation).

Nibbles and Yum-Yums: July 23, 2010

This post is a part of the weekly series in which I share my favorite Internet finds from the past week. Enjoy!

First off, let’s address this week’s picture. Normally in this weekly series, I feature a photo of some kind of candy. Today, however, I’m sharing a little eye candy. Yes, that’s me, dancing with my favorite comedian, actor and all-around-cool-guy Hal Sparks. If you don’t know who Hal is, shame on you! I forgive you though because I know that everyone has a favorite someone in the world who makes them freak out like a teenage girl. Who is your someone? It’s only fair that you share with me now that I’ve shared mine with you….Now, on to business.

What Motivates You?
My aunt sent me a link to this really great video of a speech by Daniel Pink, author of the book Drive. It’s all about what motives us and it really is a great compliment to the information provided in my free mini-workbook. Check out both and let me know if you agree or disagree with our thoughts on motivation in the workplace.

This week, I was a guest posting fool. I had three wonderful articles (in my humble opinion) that appeared on three amazing blogs (their amazingness is an undisputable fact). Check them out!

And lastly, I’d like to give a shout out to a great friend of mine who is doing something really cool that you simply must check out. It’s not career-related but, you know what, we all have different sides of our personality so something tells me at least a few of you will jump on this. Now, I’m no fashionista, but I like serious discounts on fabulous clothes like any fabulous woman would. If you do too, check out:

I can always trust that Christina will only share the very best stuff and will always get her hands on a HUGE coupon for her visitors. That’s why I *heart* these sites. Stop by and shop your little heart out, my friends.

Happy Friday ya’ll!

9 Simple and Free Activities to Trigger Creative Inspiration

Some thoughts on coaxing the muses to come out and play…by yours truly. This guest post appeared on The Skool of Life, one of my favorite personal development blogs. The author, Srini, is so genuine and honest which, at times, feels very rare in the blogosphere.

Finding Your Career Path

This article comes from Ms. Career Girl, a blog I’ve just found but I think I kind of love it. This article gives a few really great points to consider when exploring the age old question of “What do I want to be when I grow up?” However, it’s woefully incomplete. The process is much more involved than what this author outlines. I’ve created a comprehensive step-by-step process for helping people figure out what they want to do career-wise and I believe it truly takes time and some serious self-analysis. This article is a nice start, but not nearly enough.

50 Ways to Start Fresh

Feeling trapped? Want to go back to bed and wake up to a new life? Check out this list for some amazing suggestions on how to conquer boredom and ignite a new spark! Sounds promising, doesn’t it? Dragos Roua won’t let you down.

How to Find Your Goals

This is an interesting read about values-based goal setting. I think the author hits the nail on its head in this one. Any goal worth pursuing needs to be based on your core values, and those are the goals that will keep you motivated long-term. This article contains an exercise to help you figure out exactly how to make sure your goals are aligned with your values.

Your Job Mismatch Will Kill Your Career

This article really hit home with me. I’ve been in a job mismatch before and I experienced everything outlined here. And, ultimately, I came to the same conclusion…

Life Design + Unicorns = Awesome

This past week, my Twitter friend, Erika Lyremark (the infamous Daily Whip) introduced me to Alexandra Franzen (freelance writer/personal branding extraordinaire and all-around awesome chick) and her blog, which is probably one of the most exciting Internet finds I’ve stumbled upon in recent months. It’s called—get this—Unicorns for Socialism. I don’t know….just go with it. I DO know that I like it. And I especially like her Life Design 2010 idea. It actually inspired me to think about my own Life Design. So keep your eye out for that. I’ll post it here when I’m done. But be warned, it won’t be nearly as pretty as Alexandra’s.

Letting Go Of Your Ego at Work

This post is written by Christopher Edgar, author of Inner Productivity, a fabulous book I reviewed for OfficeArrow several months ago. Here, he looks at procrastination and the ever-troublesome ego at work. Not that I’ve ever experienced problems with my ego getting in the way at work or anything…I’m just thinking of you guys. (Did that sound convincing?)

Why Not Start Now?

I just discovered Patty Bechtold and her wonderful blog! She’s a wonderfully descriptive writer and her posts just suck me in. I was fortunate to stumble upon her 99th post, in which she reflects on the simple philosophy emerging. After reading it, I knew I’d be visiting regularly.

The Secret Stress Buster No One Dares Tell You About

I absolutely adore this post. I’m not going to tell you the secret thing he’s talking about here. You’ll have to go read it for yourself. But ultimately, it’s all about shedding the victim mentality and MAN, that’s what people need to hear. I admire the writer of this article for his straight-up, no B.S. approach.
