Future-Self Exercise

Hello and welcome!

You are visiting this page as a coaching client of mine. Thank you for respecting our confidentiality agreement by not sharing this link with anyone else.

Before you get started, please make sure you’re in a quiet, private and comfortable location.

You’re about to go on a journey. The first part of this exercise will take approximately 20 minutes. I ask you to do it only once for the time being. You will have the opportunity to do it again in the future if you’d like.

Here are the instructions: (Please have paper and pen handy)

PART 1: Guided Meditation

Listen to this audio file. You may click the play button on the player below to listen right from this page. Or you can download the file and transfer it to an iPod or other MP3 player if you’d like. (Remember to have your computer speakers turned up)

PART 2: Journaling

When you are finished, stay in your quiet, private and comfortable location. Take 10 minutes to write down your experiences. Please do not share this with anyone else until after your next session. To help you in this journaling process, consider the following questions:

  • What did you see?
  • How did you feel?
  • Where were you?
  • What wisdom did your future-self share?
  • Does your future self have a nickname? What is it and why?
  • Pretend now that you’re near the end of your life. In looking back, what would you have needed to do/see/experience in order to consider your life to be one of fulfillment and few or no regrets?

PART 3: Artistic Representation

The next part of this exercise will take a little more time and creativity. I’d like you to create a physical representation of your future self and future life. This can take any form you choose: a vision board, a poem, a song, a collage, a painting, whatever you’d like. It should be a project that feels exciting and uplifting. When you’re done, you should be able to experience your piece of artwork and feel some kind of positive emotion about the future. Include tangible details if possible (i.e., describe what life will really BE like) and include any specific lessons/reminders offered by your future-self that you want to keep front and center in your mind.

If you have any problems, questions or concerns, please email me. Otherwise, enjoy your experience. I look forward to debriefing with you in the near future.
